There is no God and we are his prophets.
  Cormac McCarthy "The Road"

'You have to carry the fire.'
'I don't know how to.'
'Yes, you do.'
'Is the fire real? The fire?'
'Yes it is.'
'Where is it? I don't know where it is.'
'Yes you do. It's inside you. It always was there. I can see it.'
  Cormac McCarthy "The Road"

"The Road" is a painful, beautiful, horrifying, heartfelt extremely dark novel, a tale of the end of the  World what we know. In the near future everything is changing. The World is covered in ash, the sun blotted out, food is so scarce and cannibalism is the norm. Small groups of people survived the worst  but virtually all other animal and vegetative life has vanished. The new World of grey, black, and white, the new World of no hope, pain, no good and no future.
For the Father and the Boy, the main characters of the novel, this is the real World, the real life. Every day they have to fight; fight with hunger, with the weather, with danger, with other people. They have to fight for the next sunrise and the next sunset.
A man and his son are traveling along a highway to the South to avoid the onslaught of winter, across a cold, barren, ash-ridden and abandoned land and pushing all their worldly goods in a wonky shopping trolley.
But the worst is just coming, they don't know about it yet.

Why you should read it

Because "The Road" is the saddest story about fight for the future and to save the one you love. It's a moving and terrifying story which can become a truth one day.

Things to look out for

What is happening with the man, when is losing ground, all hopes, when is losing everything what he had, what he loved, what he needed? A recurring conversation between the boy and his father. Fatherhood, unyielding love, and the lengths we go to for the ones we love. The fact that the man is able to do everything, sacrifice everything, even an own life, for the one's who he loves.

The last word about the book

"The Road" isn't easy and happy story. It's dark and hard story about life about the worst nightmare of being human living on the World full of pain, violence, darkness and no hopes. This story is brutal but the World, even current, isn't nice, is also brutal and dark. The end of "The Road" is... painful but beautiful. I am sure you will be lost with amongst words of this book. You need only time to think about every fragment and about the meaning of this book.
