Paulo Coelho : The Spy

By Małgorzata Mikos - 10.12.16

Death is nothing, nor life either, for that matter. To die, to sleep, to pass into nothingness, what does it matter? Everything is an illusion.
                                                                                                   Mata Hari

Mata Hari: was she a spy or wasn't she?

Mata Hari was an exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy and executed by firing squad in France under charges of espionage for Germany during World War I.
  But who she really was?
A woman who loved life and freedom and who wanted to be loved and be free? A dancer? A a woman desired by men and hated by women? Lost soul? A person who lived in the wrong times? A spy? A prostitute? Guilty or innocent?

"The Spy" is about her life, her world, her story full of unexplained things. Of course this book is not a biography of Mata Hari, so you can forget about black and white facts from her life. "The Spy" is a story about last hours of Mata Hari, about her hypothetical letter created by an author, where she is writing the story of her life. This letter is a confession and also is a longing for past times when she was a goddess of dance.
"The Spy" has a two parts. First one is a letter written by Mata Hari to her lawyer, the second - a letter to Mata Hari from her lawyer about her future, the future with no light and without a happy ending.

Why you should read it

Because every story has own dark side, has own dark secrets. Especially when someone's life looks so wonderful. To feel something new, something else that a normal life. To be a part of the times of Mata Hari greatest years. To think about the time and about memories. Think about what is really important and what is just an illusion of wonderful moment.

Things to look out for

What's more important -  the power or good life? What the man can do to feel better, to be free? Our mind and our memories are really treacherous because sometimes we see what we want to see and that what we think that is unique is just another "nothing special thing" in our life.

The last word about the book

"The Spy" isn't a long book but the story inside is so amazing and full of extreme emotions that you want more and more and when you finish it you can't believe that there's no more. That's why you're reading it quickly and you're pleased with every page, every next chapter.
