Camilla Läckberg : The Scent of Almonds and Other Stories

By Małgorzata Mikos - 8.2.18

"The Scent of Almonds" is a short novella with Martin Molin, one of the members of Patrick's team as the main character.
It's less than a week until Christmas and the policeman is begrudgingly accompanying his girlfriend, Lisette Liljecrona, to a family reunion on the tiny island of Valön outside of Fjällbacka. Molin is trapped for a storm-wracked weekend in a boutique resort on an island off the mainland. The weekend "from hell" is changing to "the weekend of murder and fear" - patriarch Ruben collapses during Christmas dinner, poisoned by one of the family members. They are completely isolated on the island and help won't come, and time is flying. Family in a big crisis cut off from the rest of the world by the driving snow, one crime. And that murderer.
      Murderer...is one of them.

Why you should read it

"The Scent of Almonds" is a Nordic Noir and classic mystery. It's narrated in true Agatha Christie style, so it's like an old-fashioned good story. The story is about family and own secrets mixed with individual backstories and relationships of family members. It's like a dark, long evening among family members with who sometimes you don't have a good connection.

Things to look out for

Dynamic action, dark secrets of the family, great style of crime novella.

The last word about the book

"The Scent of Almonds" is a short book but it's a good one. To be honest, the story isn't as chilling as readers might expect. In my opinion, the end could be a bit darker and more surprising. If you want to read something short of good story and mystery, this book is for you.
