Christine Lynn Herman : The Devouring Gray

By Małgorzata Mikos - 5.10.19

Four Paths had its charms, if you could ignore the fact that it was also a monster prison she apparently had some ancestral obligation to deal with.

Christine Lynn Herman, The Devouring Gray

What the book is about

This is not a normal place. It is a town that has its charm and dark face. This town has secrets and powers.
Here, reality mixes with magic, creating two parallel worlds. And the descendants of the founders live among ordinary people, protecting them from the mighty Beast.
    Welcome to the Four Paths.

Many years ago, Thomas Carlisle, Lydia Saunders, Richard Sullivan, and Hetty Hawthorne stopped the cruel Beast. They imprisoned it in an alternative world, in Gray, which looks like Four Paths.

Violet and her mother come to the Four Paths, her hometown. The girl suffers from the death of her beloved sister. For Violet, the town looks a bit strange, different from others. And she is right. Four Paths is a unique place, governed by its laws and has a rather peculiar atmosphere.
Justin, May, Harper, and Isaac are descendants of the founders. From their ancestors, they inherited unique powers. Because of these powers, they can stop the Beast and they can protect innocent people and the town.
After some time, Violet finds out that she is a descendant of one of the founders and this information is the beginning of monstrous events.
The girl must find enough strength to find the truth about her family, about herself and discover her hidden power. Power is a blessing and a curse at the same time.
There is the other world - Gray. A world that penetrates the human mind, whispers and kills.
The beast is not the only threat to the Four Paths. In the darkness, a forgotten group is forming, planning a terrible conspiracy, which is a threat not only to the founder's families but above all to the all in the town.

Who will turn out to be a friend and who will be a traitor? What secrets hide descendants of the founders and this town? Will they be able to stop the Beast?

Why you should read it

The greatest asset of the novel undoubtedly is the characters. With the baggage of experiences that we discover piece by piece. The world created in the novel is unique, full of magic, light and darkness. The action is conducted efficiently and with many moments of surprise. The motive of the cult, its good and bad sides was presented interestingly.
It is a story of victory and defeat, loyalty and betrayal, love and friendship. About the fight for life, the future, beloved people. It is a dark tale about standing up to destiny and about the fight for life and death.

The last word about the book

"The Devouring Gray" is a well-composed dark tale about a small town, its residents, secrets and the need for closeness. This is a story about the fight against demons that each of us fights every day. After all, this is an amazing novel of the dark fantasy genre.
I recommend to everyone, not just young people.
